Up to $5 million for microgrid pilots in regional and remote Australia

The Regional Australia Microgrid Pilots Program is offering up to $5 million to support pilot microgrid demonstrations that use renewable energy with the objective of improving resilience and reliability of electricity supply in regional Australia.

Eligible projects must:

  • have demonstrated viability through a Feasibility Study;

  • include the deployment of equipment and technology solutions that enable the coordinated use of distributed renewable energy technologies and the microgrid demonstration;

  • demonstrate improved resilience and reliability of microgrids in regional areas; and

  • demonstrate capability of resoling one or more of the remaining barriers to final investment and full deployment of microgrid solutions.

Grants are offered on a co-contribution basis with the minimum grant being $250,000 and the grant representing no more than 50% of total eligible project costs.

Applicants must first register a suitable Feasibility Study with ARENA, which will be assessed and if the project is deemed eligible, ARENA will be invited to submit a full application.

Successful projects will contribute to each of the following Program Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate improved electricity resilience and reliability.

  2. Address the technical, regulatory and commercial barriers to final investment and full deployment of microgrids in regional Australia.

  3. Advance upon learnings and innovation already demonstrated within the existing portfolio of microgrid projects.

Funding is available over six years or until funds are exhausted.
