Grant funding up to $25 million for innovative health and medical research projects

The Frontier Health and Medical Research grant program supports researchers to pursue development of new products and interventions, and implement these into clinical practice, benefiting patients, clinicians, and the Australian health system.

This grant funding programs supports medical research and medical innovation programs or research that create a treatment for a currently serious and incurable health condition. Research programs can propose to develop novel health technologies and / or re-purpose existing health technologies in a novel way.

Applicants may request grant funding up to $25 million for a program of research, and may apply for funding for up to 5 years for each project within a broader program of research designed to deliver a ‘moonshot’ within 10 years. In the context of this grant program a ‘moonshot’ is defined as ambitious, exploratory and ground-breaking program of research that utilises health technology to address a challenging clinical problem, aiming to develop a novel treatment for, or means of prevention of, a current or predictable future serious and incurable health condition.

The program has a two stage application process including:

  1. Expression of Interest outlining a proposed program of research wtih a 10-year time horizon

  2. Full application for a project of up to 5 years under the program of research

Eligibility Entities:

  • Must hold an Australian Business Number

  • Must be incorporated in Australia

  • Must be one of the following entities:

    • a medical research institute

    • a university

    • a corporate Commonwealth entity

    • a corporation (including business and not-for-profits)

Eligible grant activities may include:

  • Equipment up to $80,000

  • Employment of personnel including technical, administrative and project management staff (plus on-costs)

  • Other direct research costs including contracted activities, travel, and other activities directly related to the project

Expressions of Interest can be submitted at any time until the indicative closing date of 31 March 2026.

Applicants submitting an eligible and competitive EOI will be invited to submit a full application form for funding.
