WA Government Issues Renewable Energy Challenge PDF Print E-mail

The Renewable Energy Technology Challenge, a joint initiative between the Department of Commerce, the Pilbara Development Commission and Horizon Power, aims to address the need for a renewable energy smoothing device suitable for premises fitted with solar panels.

The Challenge will award a $50,000 prize to the winner. A runner up will win $10,000.

According to Innovation Minister John Day, "there is currently no cost competitive device available for small scale renewable energy systems on the market. This challenge is looking for innovative individuals or organisations to develop a sustainable solution that can be adapted to fill this gap."

Applications close Friday 22 March 2013. More information can be found on the Commerce website.

$6 million for Coastal Protection PDF Print E-mail

The WA State Government is inviting applications for funding through the Coastal Adaptation and Protection (CAP) grant program. $5 million will be available in the 2013-14 funding round and a further $1 million will be available to local coastal managers in 2014-15. Grants are available to coastal managers including Local Government authorities, State Government agencies and authorities, Aboriginal Land Councils and other corporate bodies directly involved with coastal management. Project types include monitoring, adaptation planning, asset management, adaptation and maintenance for coastline immediately adjacent to the oceans of WA but exclude estuaries and rivers.

Grants from $20,000 up to $1 million will be offered, for between 50% and 75% of the total cost of the project, depending on the tupe of project. Applications must be submitted by 5pm, 19th April 2013.

The State Government has opened the Regional Airports Development Scheme, with $8 million in grant funding available to improve regional aviation infrastructure. Previous funding was allocated to projects which included runways, facility and safety developments, airport studies including master plans, lighting and fencing, with grants ranging from $5,000-$1.8 million. Applications must be submitted by 5pm, 22nd February 2013.

A new $20 million Australian Interactive Games Fund was announced today by Arts Minister Simon Crean. Mr Crean said the 3-year fund "will support the development of games in Australia, investing in the intellectual property of our creative businesses to give them a stronger position internationally".

The interactive entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world economy. The fund will commence in 2012-13, delivering $5 million per annum in the first and second years, and $10 million in 2014-15. Read the full media release on Minister Crean's website.

Changes to Australia's Intellectual Property laws will make it more challenging for entrepreneurs and start-ups to obtain a valid patent.  The new law increases the standard to receive patent protection, requiring patent applicants to prove they are making a significant advance on what is already on the market.  The laws will be effective from April 2013, however applications filed prior to this date may still be affected by the changes.  For the full story go to StartupSmart.
